A composition which generates light upon triggering which comprises: (a) a fluorescent compound joined with a hydrocarbon chain of 8 to 20 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of fluorescent dyes and aromatic compounds which provides a co-surfactant (b) a surfactant different from component (a) and (c) a stable 1,2-dioxetane compound of the formula (I) wherein R 1 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R 2 is selected from an aryl and a biaryl group and is a spirofused adamantyl group wherein OX is an X-oxy group substituted on an aryl ring which forms an unstable oxide intermediate 1,2-dioxetane compound when triggered to remove X by an activating agent selected from acid, base, salt, enzyme and inorganic and organic catalysts and electron donor sources and X is a chemically labile group which is removed by the activating agent to form the unstable oxide intermediate and wherein the stable 1,2-dioxetane decomposes in the presence of an activating agent to produce light and carbonyl containing compounds of the formula and wherein the stable 1,2-dioxetane is decomposed with the activating agent and wherein the dioxetane and fluorescent compound are in a closely spaced relationship in a micelle, liposome, reversed micelle, microemulsion, film, monolayer or polymer and wherein the fluorescent compound accepts the electronic energy generated upon decomposition of the unstable oxide intermediate and produces a more intense light than is produced by the triggering of the dioxetane alone.Ģ.
